Well, it wasn’t a huge logging event but, when you’re trying to load up on wood for the winter, it sure feels like it.
My husband and I were cutting out some dead trees in the woods behind us (well I was supervising the cutting down part) and he decided we needed our mare Feather to help out.
So I threw the roping saddle on her and headed down the road.
Dragging logs out of the woods onto the main trail.
There’s something about this mare…I just love.
I always tell people we may not be super great at one thing but, she’s done everything I’ve asked her to do.

My now 9 yr. old mare Feather, as a weanling in 2004.
Feather, 2012.
Sora as a weanling, 2011.
As a 2 yr. old, 2013.
My now 6 yr. old mare Sophia, as a weanling.
Sophia, 2012.
One thing for sure with Appaloosas, you can always expect change.

I’ll never get sick of posting photos like this.
I’m amazed at how wonderful mares can be when the baby is giving some pretty good udder bumps to open the milk bar! Ouch
Belly (and face) full of warm milk.

What does a girl like me do on a beautiful fall day?
I do whatever the critters want…
Who needs expensive toys when you have corn fields and stuff around the farm?
When you’re running at the speed of light, it helps to stick out your tongue.
This is a great photo if you don’t mind the fresh “I just rolled in something but, maybe my ear will hide it” look.
Got one shot of Emma as she sat down for 1/100th of a second.
My road to a sane, take me anywhere, horse…
Let’s recycle.
Sora wanted to mow the lawn and walked over.
The wind was blowing. That’s my baby, just keep munching away.
Oops! Almost forgot the princess!

Uh oh! Getting behind on my weekly photo challenges!
This is what came to mind for “big”.
My big sky in Wisconsin.

When I saw that the weekly photo challenge was free spirit, I immediately thought of this photo.
My husband took this last fall.
It’s dusk and the sky was brilliant.
No fences, saddle, bridle or halter. What better way (in my opinion) to represent “free spirit” than an Appaloosa. With their rich Native American history…
Free Spirit

This is the first thing that came to my mind when I saw this challenge.
We live on a farm and I think this is a beautiful moment.
Whether you’re a horse, dog, cat, cow, human or basically “All Creatures Great And Small”.
Did you read those books by James Herriot?
You should.
Get ready…
Are you sure you want to see?
Ok…
here…
it…
is…
Inside for 11 months and 10 days.
Outside…finally, after 11 months and 10 days.
Until next time…Appy trails.

I found a great sale on personalized halters, online. So I just couldn’t wait to get Sora’s.
She’s only 10 months old but she’ll grow into the adult halter eventually.
I adjusted it so it was as small as it would go and told everyone to stand still for the pictures I wanted to take.
Except for Feather, it didn’t go too bad…
Ok, I see you, now “whoa”!
Whoa
Whoa
So I ended up turning and making a run for the other side of the lot…
Great now Sora is in on the game. Whoa…
Oh come on! I’m running out of breath! She can sneak up on a person pretty quick in this snow!
Finally! I’m going to stop now. My hands are freezing and I’m pooped.
Until next time…Appy Trails

Well, we’ve been spoiled this winter season in Wisconsin, with some very mild temperatures and even a GREEN Christmas!
Don’t get me wrong it’s been great!!
We’ve had some boring days, too.
But now we have snow!! Let’s play ball!!!
I know it’s here somewhere!!
Uh oh, the ball is in the horse paddock! I don’t think Sophia is going to throw it back Emma.
Do you think Gus will help?
I’m sure baby Sora will play along and throw it back.
Gunner is victorious! Whinny and Emma? Not so much….
