Posts Tagged ‘horse treats’

My truck is in the shop,

My trailer is at the neighbors (because that’s were we had to tow them),

It’s a sunny day but you’ll get blown over if you step outside,

Hubby is away, turkey hunting.

What to do, what to do…

I think I’ll make some horse treats!

I have all the ingredients and I don’t feel like running to town to replace the treats that Tater ate the last time he broke into the feed shed…

I found this online years ago and the horses love them!

Jr. Riders Journal Treat Recipes (Erina and Elvis’ Horse Cookie Recipe)

  • 4 c of flour (wheat or white)
  • 3 c oatmeal
  • 1 egg
  • 4 T brown sugar
  • 3/4 c applesauce
  • 4 T vegetable oil
  • 1/2 c molasses
  • 1 c hot water

Preheat oven to 300 degrees F and spray cooking oil on some baking sheets. Mix the oatmeal, flour and brown sugar together, then mix in the egg, veg. oil, applesauce and molasses. Add hot water and mix well.

Roll out dough to 1/2 inch thickness on a floured surface. Cut out shapes using cookie cutters.

Place cookies on baking sheet and bake for 1 hr. Then just turn off oven and leave door shut until they cool (this will make them crunchy).

When rolling try not to use too much flour so when they come out there will be no loose flour on the cookies.

Take off your rings when dealing with the dough. Just saying…

I don’t have much counter space and all I could find for cookie cutters were huge Christmas ones so, I found another use for a shot glass. Oh and my tiny rolling pin. Winking smile

So I’ll have to shake off some flour but, the cookies make your house smell delicious and just slide right off the sheet, too!

Just a word of warning…Don’t let your dogs taste test the treats!!!!

Or, you’ll find yourself coming home at 12:30 a.m. after having a nice night out with friends at a fish fry and walking into a smell that burn your nose and make your lungs shrivel up in fear and then your realize the dogs have sprayed flaming diarrhea in the master bedroom and living room and that you thank God that you actually have a carpet shampooer and then start arguing over who’s going to clean the carpets and who’s going to wash the dogs because they both are jobs from hell and then realize that you don’t have any kitchen gloves and that the latex gloves in the horse first aid kit will work but they break so easily when you put them on in a hurry!

Ahem…or so I’m told.

Until next time…Appy Trails Smile
